Applying for Aid

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Information

The 2023-2024 FAFSA is available!

The 2024-2025 FAFSA will be available by the end of December 2023!

Every year students and families must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the appropriate award year in order to be considered for federal financial aid (including student loans).

The 2023-2024 FAFSA is available. You will use 2021 income and tax information to complete the 2023-2024 FAFSA. Since you already have this information, there is no need to wait to file your FAFSA using the FAFSA website!

Priority Deadline - Most need-based aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, so the sooner you file your FAFSA after it opens, the better!

Tips For Filing FAFSA

Need Help?
Contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 800/433-3243 for assistance with any of the following:

  • Technical issues with FAFSA and/or FAFSA website
  • Making changes to your FAFSA
  • Signing your FAFSA
  • Account username and password (FSA ID).

School Code
In order for us to receive your FAFSA, you must list our federal code number 003456.

FSA User ID
Both Student and Parent need their own FSA User ID  (View details.)

Name on FAFSA
When completing the FAFSA, report your name exactly as it appears on your Social Security card. Do not use nicknames, abbreviations, or middle names as first names. The U.S. Department of Education requires that your name on the FAFSA identically match your name on Social Security Administration records. You will be required to submit additional documentation should a name conflict occur.

Eligibility to File a FAFSA/Receive Federal Financial Aid
You, the student, must be a U.S. citizen or a documented, eligible non-citizen (your parent does not need to be a citizen for you to receive federal financial aid). You must be admitted to Winthrop University as a regular degree-seeking undergraduate student, a Winthrop Think College Student, or a graduate student seeking a degree or a certificate in Dietetic Internship or Counseling.

What Happens Next
The Office of Financial Aid will receive an electronic copy of your FAFSA approximately 2 weeks after you submit it. Once we receive it, you may be requested to provide additional documentation. The Department of Education selects approximately 30 percent of all applicants for a verification process. This means the Office of Financial Aid must collect certain documents to confirm the accuracy of the information you provided on your FAFSA. You will receive an e-mail from us if you need to provide any further information.

Once the FAFSA is complete and you are fully admitted to Winthrop, you will receive an e-mail notification directing you to Wingspan to view your financial aid award package (late December for incoming freshmen and transfer students and late June for returning students and graduate students).
